- Demo: LOADSTAR 2001
-
- Program by Richard DeRocher
- Text by Dave Moorman
-
-
- Now on to a [real] example of Demo
- coding. Richard is known for bringing
- us a number of interesting games built
- from Construction Sets. Nothing wrong
- with that! If the game plays well, we
- don't care what tools were used to
- produce the software.
-
- With this Demo, Richard moves out
- on his own -- putting together a
- number of tools from our own LOADSTAR
- toolbox. The result is great -- an
- important demonstration of "what
- Richard can do with his machine." He
- has clear "brag rightz" because this
- is his own work.
-
-
- Allow me to wax philosophical.
- When I was working on Sea to Sea, a
- friend looked at my intermediate
- efforts. His first comment had to do
- with the fact that railroad games had
- been done.
-
- So what? At that point, [I] had
- not done one. Moreover, when finished,
- Sea to Sea had a huge advantage over
- all other railroad games, no matter
- what its limitation might be....
-
- It's [MINE]!
-
- The other comment of my friend --
- after Sea to Sea appeared on LOADSTAR
- -- was, "So, when are you going to do
- some real games (meaning "on a PC")
- and make some real money?"
-
- "Ahem. exCuse ME!?"
-
- IF I worked for a major software
- house, and
-
- IF I could get my idea pushed
- through a dozen marketing and
- production committees, and
-
- IF I commanded the advertising and
- distribution resources --
-
- THEN I [might] make some "real
- money."
-
- The alternative is to create a PC
- program and put it on CNET for
- downloading -- hoping the shareware
- tag would produce at least a few
- registrations, if not a few bucks.
-
- I [have] put PC software on CNET
- -- in particular our eLOADSTAR
- Sampler. Last I looked, some 1,400
- copies were downloaded. Has anyone so
- much as emailed me with a "Thank You,"
- or even "This Stinks!"?
-
- NO! Out of 1.4 KiloCopies, I would
- expect [some] feedback.
-
- But the PC world is full of
- "Napsters" -- people who grab free
- software without so much as a "by your
- leave."
-
- The Commodore world is different.
- LOADSTARites are uniqe in that we DO
- care. We do enjoy the litle amusements
- and we let the coders know. The C-64
- is a small market. The money is
- somewhere between negligable and
- non-existant. The fame is
- international -- albeit a tiny niche
- of international.
-
- But it is [real]. Honest to Gosh
- REAL!
-
- So -- take a shot, like Richard
- has done. Wrap up your "baby" and let
- me see it. Believe me -- if it works
- well and bears the mark of your best
- effort, you will see it sometime on
- LOADSTAR.
-
- But do take a page from Richard's
- book -- use the tools we have. They
- are freely available, well documented,
- and not hard to incorporate in your
- Magnus Opus Genius!
